Healthy eating

St Mary Immaculate Catholic Primary School achieved Healthy Schools status in 2009. The award is based on four themes
• Healthy Eating • Physical Activity • Emotional Health and Well-being • Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education
Children at the school made a list of reasons why physical activity is important
• to get fit • to keep healthy • to get in the sun • to have fun • to be able to run faster • to help us stay awake • to get exercise • to stop us getting bored sitting in class for too long • to learn useful skills
The Healthy Schools assessment, which looks at all four themes, noted that:
Free milk is available to all children at morning break. Two thirds of pupils regularly drink milk at school.
Children's behaviour in the dining room is rewarded every week in a social assembly through the Fine Diners' award. This is a good opportunity to promote healthy eating.
Two thirds of children regularly walk or cycle to school.
All children have the opportunity to take part in at least 2 hours of physical activity each week.
In a recent survey all children report that they enjoy meeting friends at school, socialising at lunchtimes and playing with their friends at playtimes.
Regular circle time in the infants has enabled children to empathise with their peers' difficulties and be supportive.
There is No Smoking anywhere on the school site.
Children receive a comprehensive PSHE education through the broad and balanced R.E. curriculum, supported by Science and other curriculum areas. Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning (SEAL) resources are used to supplement the Diocesan R.E. scheme, which is the basis for PSHE work.
The School has also received the:
- Heartbeat Award for providing Healthy Food Choices, May 2009
- Hygiene Inspection Gold rating for achieving excellent standards in hygiene, safety, cleanliness and food safety management, January 2009
